In a sincere and grand gesture, East Coast Roofing, Siding and Windows surprised 80-year young Somers Point resident Carol Bird with a brand-new roof, just in time for the holidays. Carol’s widow, Ronald Bird Sr. was an active member of the community, having served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was the Somers Point Fire Captain for 52 years, and an active member of the American Legion and VFW. While not working, Bird Sr. volunteered his plumbing services for the firehouses, VFW, and Legion.

Since his passing, Bird’s roof has been in desperate need of repair. A leak was recently discovered in the kitchen along with noticeable damage in other parts of the home.

On-hand for Tuesday’s surprise visit was Larry Stiteler, founder of East Coast Roofing, Siding, and Windows, who delivered the exciting news. Ronald Bird Jr., Carol’s stepson, Ronald Bird Jr. nominated her for the free roof. He shared his reaction to the call. “I got chills. I was anxious to tell her, and I knew it was going to be a surprise.”

Members of the American Legion Riders and VFW were also on-site, parading from Somers Point ShopRite to Bird’s home, with the assistance of the Somers Point Police and Fire Departments. Other community members, including Chick-fil-A, joined together in a spectacular display of support. East Coast has donated new roofs to deserving families in need across our region since 2007. This year, the company received 35 nominations, everyone from veterans to first responders and outstanding community members.
