Richard Somers Day Celebrated in Somers Point

By Steffen Klenk

On Wednesday, September 15th, the City of Somers Point commemorated and honored the life of the late naval officer, Richard Somers. Among the guests in attendance included members of the USS Somers Crewmembers Association, whom celebrated their 10th Anniversary earlier this week in Atlantic City. Spokesman Bob Plante spoke about the camaraderie of last week’s reunion, and the efforts to naming a new ship after the late commander. “It would keep up the legacy of the Somers. We want active duty members to know the history of Somers.”

Local dignitaries were also present for this special ceremony, including the Mayor of Somers Point, who remarked on the continuing efforts to bring Richard Somers to rest in Somers Point, along with the twelve members of the Intrepid. “We will continue that fight, because we want them home. It’s time.” Other attendees included Kirk Gerty with the Somers Point Historical Society and Donna Mohr, representing the Somers Point Arts Commission. In 2015, a mural representing the life of Richard Somers was unveiled at the Library next to City Hall.
