Reckless Readers share camaraderie around books

Members of the Reckless Readers book club gathered in the atrium at Seashore Gardens Living Center on August 17 to discuss The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis. This monthly book group is led by Assistant Director of Recreation Cindy Weinraub and involves residents in both Assisted Living and the long-term care neighborhood of the Home.

The discussion about the book, The Lions of Fifth Avenue, was lively and interesting.

During the activity, residents reflected on the traditional roles of being a wife and mother in the early 20th century, when the historic novel was set. The mostly female group discussed their experiences juggling family and a job, and how it has changed over the years. One resident said, “We can have it all, just not all at the same time.”

“It’s always a great, interesting discussion,” said Weinraub who runs the group with help from her local library. “The Ventnor Library has been such an ally and support,” she said. “They assist with recommendations and help me to get multiple copies of the books, including those in large print. I can’t thank the librarians enough for making this possible.”

Each month, Cindy picks up the books at the Ventnor Library and distributes them to the Reckless Readers. She prints out a summary of the book to remind residents of the plot and uses questions from LitLovers.com to guide the discussion.
