Pleasantville’s Long-Standing ‘Mom & Pop’ Music Shoppe

By Cindy Fertsch

Pleasantville Music Shoppe is South Jersey’s oldest family owned and operated music retailer. It was established in 1938 when Black Horse Pike was still a a dirt road. Can you imagine that!

Gaston Ragno, the original proprietor, began his career as a young man teaching guitar lessons for Harold Abrams.  After working awhile, Gaston was promoted to manager. When Mr. Abrams wanted to retire, he persuaded Gaston to purchase the business. The deal was sealed on “a handshake and a dollar,” says Gaston’s daughter and the current owner, Joanne Schilling. Gaston was a young man with no money, but he decided to take a leap of faith and never looked back.Gaston came to the shop every single day well into his senior years; in fact, up until his passing, four years ago. Today, his daughter,  Joanne owns Pleasantville Music Shoppe and operates it along with her husband, Jim Craine.

Jim is also an entertainer, best known as the ” Singing Lifeguard” and radio host on Newstalk 1400 WOND. “I “I am humbled and honored to be in show business for over 45 years and to also help propel aspiring performers through my work at the music shop,” shares Jim.

Many generations of families continue to patronize the Pleasantville Music Shoppe and share so many stories and memories of the excitement of their firstt instrument purchases.
