2021 At-The-Shore Fall Bucket List

September is here,  and that means it’s time to whip out our jackets and taste some pumpkin. As the seasons change, it’s the perfect time to plan out fun activities to celebrate the cold weather and upcoming holidays. Here’s some local ideas to enjoy and help you get into the autumn spirit:

Buy Some New Cozy Sweaters

New seasons are a great opportunity to update your wardrobe, and what’s more comfortable than a quality-knit sweater? Check out The Arc Makes Cents or Next Generation Exchange for some thrifted gems! One or two new pieces will make you feel confident and cool.

Visit the Beach

There’s something special about the beach in autumn. The breeze and mellow vibe can make anyone feel at peace. Bring a sweatshirt, a book, and a coffee and nestle in the sand for some relaxation and pleasure. Maybe even bring your dog, too!

Bake Fall Treats

From pies to cookies, you can bake all kinds of sweets that’ll get you excited about autumn. Test your skills and try making pumpkin scones, apple turnovers, or even a sweet potato soup! Share your creations with family and friends, and they’ll be sure to come back for more.

Enjoy Local Events

The Jersey Shore has plenty to offer when it comes to fall events. Check out the Seafood Festival(page 38-39) or the Margate Fall Festival (page 22-23). There’ll be plenty of vendors to meet and foods to taste. Visit a local vineyard (like Renault Winery) and sip some fall-flavored drinks. The opportunities are never-ending!

Go on a Hayride

Hayrides are the quintessential autumn activity, and you can choose your level of thrill! Birch Grove Park in Egg Harbor Township offers a family-friendly ride through the park, while Terror in the Junkyard suits older children and adults. You can read more about Terror in the Junkyard on page 28.

Shop at a Farmer’s Market

Cook with fresh, in-season ingredients by supporting local farmers and purchasing their crops. Stop by Reed’s Farmer’s Market in Egg Harbor Township or drive over to CROPS Farmer’s Market in Linwood and buy squash, apples, onions, potatoes and carrots. Cook up a yummy stew or roast, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the freshness and crip taste!

Play Games With Your Family

Fall is the perfect opportunity to get away from screens and play outside. Nothing beats a family tag-football game in the backyard. Try a new sport like badminton or pickleball and get competitive with your spouse. If you are feeling a little less athletic, try some card games like Bridge or Dutch Blitz.

Practice Gratitude

It’s the season of thankfulness, so make sure to count your blessings. Start a gratitude journal and write three things everyday. During a family meal (maybe every Sunday), go around the table and say something you’re thankful for. When we remember all the good things in our lives, we can smile a little more and celebrate the little things.

Take a Fall Foliage Walk

Embrace the beautiful colors in nature by strolling through local spots. Atlantic County Park in Estell Manor offers great boardwalk trails through trees and Native American scenes. Kennedy Park in Somers Point has both bay and tree views. Visit your local park as soon as the leaves change!

Pumpkin Picking

Find some great pumpkin patches and pick out the best pumpkins for carving, painting, or cooking! Walking Bird Farm, Sahl’s Father and Son Farm and R and J Farm are great places to pick pumpkins. Don’t forget to take pictures too!
