The International Center of Photography (ICP) is a must-see for anyone interested in photography. It is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. The ICP’s exhibits cover the entire spectrum of the photographic medium, from early daguerreotypes to documentary images and contemporary multimedia installations. Its collections include works by some of the world’s most influential photographers, including Robert Capa, Eugène Atget, and Alfred Eisenstaedt. The Center’s bookshop is a treasure-trove of books, monographs, prints, posters, and more. And the ICP Café offers coffee and pastries if you need a break. www.icp.org
The Hispanic Society of America, located at Broadway at 155th Street in New York City, is a museum and reference library devoted to the study of the art and culture of Spain, Portugal, Latin America, and the Philippines. The Society was founded by Archer Milton Huntington (1870-1955), a noted collector who inherited vast wealth from his stepfather, the 19th-century railroad magnate, Collis P. Huntington. The Society houses one of the largest collections of Spanish paintings outside of Spain. With more than 900 paintings and 6,000 watercolors and drawings, the Hispanic Society offers a comprehensive survey of Spanish painting, including masterworks by El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, and Sorolla. The Library of the Society contains more than 300,000 books and periodicals, including 15,000 volumes printed before 1701. The Main Court of the Society recently underwent a $20 million renovation, re-opening in 2023 with updated galleries and spaces for the public. The Hispanic Society and its neighbor, the American Academy of Arts and Letter, form a complex of neo-Italian Renaissance buildings unparalleled in New York. www.hispanicsociety.org
