Not just for kids: Five ways to celebrate the holiday season as a grown-up this weekend

By Danielle Davies

Bill Murray famously grouched that Christmas was just for kids in the 1988 holiday classic, “Scrooged.” To that, we say, “Bah Humbug.” And while we dispute that the holidays are just for kids, we do agree that the holiday season can bring out the kid — and the urge to celebrate — in all of us. Which is why we’ve rounded up five fun and festive things for you to do this weekend that are off limits to kids. Here, five ways to celebrate the holiday season as a grown up this weekend.

  1. Get your “popera” on, holiday style. Tis the season of holiday music, but not just any old rendition. Head to Ocean Casino Resort 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 for operatic pop sensation Il Divo, which will be performing songs from “The Christmas Collection,” their compilation of merry classics which was certified Platinum by the RIAA. Audiences can expect to hear memorable and moving interpretations of familiar Christmas melodies for a heart-warming start to the festive season. Tickets start at $29. Located at 500 Boardwalk, Atlantic City. TheOceanAC.com
  2. Make merry with your favorite Boys. Want to enjoy your specialty cocktails with a side of boy band? Head to Nola’s Bar & Lounge at Ocean Casino Resort 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 and celebrate with “A Very Boyband Holiday Party,” where the Larger Than Life band will be performing holiday classics with a twist. Hosted by Nugget from Q102, don your favorite ugly holiday sweater and get ready to mingle and jingle with your favorite boyband. Located at 500 Boardwalk, Atlantic City. TheOceanAC.com
  3. Join together to trim the tree. Gregory’s Restaurant & Bar has been in business for decades, so they know how to celebrate a holiday. Get to their kickoff event for their 12 Days of Christmas celebrations 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11 and help trim their tree. Bring an ornament, garland or tinsel and enjoy a complimentary cup of hot soup. We recommend pairing it with an icy cold beer. Check out their website for all of their 12 Days events! Located at 900 Shore Road, Somers Point. GregorysBar.com
  4. Celebrate with the Lights Out. Spend a day of your holiday season at The Gateway Playhouse, where Lights Out band presents “A Very Decades Generations of Music Holiday” 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10. Audiences can expect their beloved favorites from the 50s through the 80s, from Bill Haley’s Comets and Johnny Maestro to Elvis, Frankie Valli and more, all woven through a winter wonderland of holiday favorites. Tickets are $32. Located at 738 Bay Ave., Somers Point. GatewayByTheBay.org
  5. Swing into the holidays. There’s having fun, and there’s giving back. And when you can do both at the same time? It’s positively magical. Get to the Musical Comedy Revue Show benefitting the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots program at Resorts 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10. With performances from Jim “The Singing Lifeguard” Craine, the Atlantic City Allstar Band, Betsy Daily and the Tony Grant Stars of Tomorrow Alumni Dancers, Suzie Neustadter, Michele Dawn Mooney and more; the night will be full of merriment, music and more. Admission is free in exchange for a new, unwrapped toy, with a cash bar available. Located at 1133 Boardwalk, Atlantic City. ResortsAC.com
