Honoring The Workers That Serve Us

Letter from the editor

Nothing is more enjoyable than summer at the Jersey Shore! Hundreds of thousands of people will be flocking to our shores this Labor Day weekend for one last hurrah. They’ll be seeking warm sea breezes, sand in their toes and the endless entertainment opportunities found up and down our shores. Labor Day weekend is summer’s last kiss before the school buses begin rolling and many of us settle into new schedules and routines.

As we celebrate, let’s remember to honor the workers that still work regardless of the holiday: the first responders, law enforcement, lifeguards, those in the retail and restaurant industry and so many more. If you are fortunate enough to enjoy a three-day reprieve from work, consider tipping a bit extra to those that are still out there serving up drinks and food.

The pandemic continues to be a game-changer for American laborers across all industries. On this day that we pay tribute to workers, we cannot forget those that have served and cared for us through the tough times. Essential workers continue to show up every single day. And as this pandemic lingers on, a year and a half later, doctors, nurses, and medical personnel are still on the frontlines, caring for those in need. Our police and firefighters continue to protect us. They’ve revealed their courage and commitment and we owe them our gratitude. We also salute everyone that, despite the generous unemployment benefits, chose to come to work this summer. They had to put in long hours and take on new duties to make up for others that couldn’t (or wouldn’t) work. Countless businesses owners have told Bob and me about this employment crisis. Some have worked nearly every day this summer. I hope they get some well-earned rest this month.

Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of all American workers. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. It’s exciting to learn that an Ocean City resident played a key role in making Labor Day the national holiday it is. Read more about this on page 26.

This summer was certainly better than the last! However, the pandemic is not yet behind us.  Our locally owned businesses have been hit hard over the last eighteen months, so please join us in supporting them, every chance you get. As a locally owned business, Bob and I know, it means everything!  We are so thankful for our advertisers who continue to support Shore Local. As you page through this issue, please give them a look. Many are the staples in our community, some through generations.

September is often called “Local’s summer.” It’s the time when those of us who work nonstop all summer, can finally enjoy the weather and beauty of the Shore. The air and water are warm, the crowds are lighter and the parking is easy. September is our month to enjoy!

As the calendar turns to September, we need not fret.  September is the Jersey Shore’s best-kept secret. The weather is gorgeous, the ocean warm and the parking is easy. Plus, there’s Football!

I love living in a climate with changing seasons and Fall offers us so much to look forward to. From crisp air to harvest festivals, the fun doesn’t stop. Our island and mainland towns have done such an extraordinary job with extending the fun and hosting lots of family-friendly events throughout the Fall.

Fall also feels like a Fresh Start. Another opportunity to live our best life and embrace each day and take on some changes that make us grow. But first, try to soak up the final days of summer and enjoy them while you can.
