Roy Gillian, a prominent figure in Ocean City, New Jersey, and former mayor, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 17, 2024. He was 94 years old.
Gillian, known for his dedication to public service and his significant contributions to the local amusement industry, founded Gillian’s Wonderland Pier in 1965, a landmark attraction at Sixth Street and the Boardwalk in Ocean City. His work in the amusement sector also included the creation of Gillian’s Island and Adventure Golf. Gillian initially began his career in the family business, taking over the Fun Deck amusement park with his brother Bob in 1957. The park was originally founded by their father, David Gillian, in 1930.
Beyond his business ventures, Gillian had a long history of public service. He served as an Ocean City commissioner from 1963 to 1967, a Cape May County Freeholder from 1971 to 1976, and the Commissioner of Cape May County Municipal Utilities from 1982 to 1986. His tenure as mayor of Ocean City spanned from 1986 to 1990. Additionally, Gillian was a member of the New Jersey Amusement Ride Safety Board, reflecting his lifelong commitment to the safety and enjoyment of amusement park visitors.
Gillian’s influence extended into various other sectors as well. He was the chairman of the board and a director of Ocean City Home Bank for 34 years and held leadership roles in several industry associations, including the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions and the New Jersey Amusement Association. His community involvement included serving as the president of Shore Medical Center and the Jersey Cape Diagnostic & Training Center.
Born and raised in Havertown, Pennsylvania, Gillian graduated from Haverford High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Gillian was a skilled pianist and led Roy Gillian & His Orchestra from 1947 to 1951.
Gillian is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patricia Gillian, his sons Steven and Jay Gillian, his stepchildren Tammy Essington Defelice and Michael Essington, 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two of his sons, John and James Gillian.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 21, at the Ocean City Tabernacle, with services to follow. Burial with military honors will take place at Seaside Cemetery in Palermo, New Jersey. Memorial contributions in his honor can be made to Shore Medical Center in Somers Point.
