After weeks of holiday treats, late nights and full calendars, January offers a natural pause. It’s the quietest month at the Jersey Shore — and for many of us, a chance to reset. This is when I turn my attention back to health and wellness and ask a simple, practical question: What can I do to take better care of myself, both physically and mentally?
I’ve learned that lasting change doesn’t come from grand resolutions. It comes from small, consistent habits built into everyday life. When I stick to those routines, I feel better all year long. When I don’t, things tend to slide.
That’s exactly what happened a couple of years ago; I found myself overweight, weak and dealing with significant knee pain. It became a vicious cycle. It hurt to move, so I moved less. The less I moved, the more weight I gained, and the more my knees suffered. At times, it felt hopeless.
Slowly, I worked my way back to a healthier equilibrium. I adjusted my diet, began strength training and committed to working out at least five days a week. Losing some weight and strengthening my legs made a remarkable difference, not just physically, but mentally as well. Along the way, I leaned on local resources that helped support that journey. As part of this month’s “Five Favorites,” I wanted to share a few that continue to make a meaningful impact in my life.
1. Santori’s Produce
My go-to for fresh fruits and vegetables at great prices. Bob and I are making a conscious effort to eat more whole, unprocessed foods, and Santori’s makes it easy. The quality, variety and affordability keep us stocked with healthy options week after week. Their ready-made salads and pre-cut fruit are a convenience I truly appreciate when life gets busy.
2. Shore Orthopaedic
Physicians helped me understand what was really happening with my knees and what my options were. There was no magic cure, and I wasn’t ready for a knee replacement. With honest guidance, lifestyle changes and medical support, I’m in a much better place today.
3. Shore Medical Center
Shore is an outstanding resource for our entire community. In recent years, the hospital has made important strides toward becoming more autism-friendly, offering sensory-friendly emergency rooms and lab experiences. This is deeply personal for me. Our late son, Jamie, was autistic, and accessing medical care often felt overwhelming. Knowing these supports now exist brings comfort to many families.
4. Strengthening Souls Yoga
Yoga supports both the mind and body, and honestly, it helped save me after losing my son in 2020. Owner Desiree McCuckin has created a space rooted in healing and compassion. Her free grief yoga classes on Wednesdays are a gift, and her sessions are equal parts restorative and strengthening.
5. Alpine Ski Shop
This one is just for fun. Children play, and adults need to play, too. Research continues to show how important recreation is for overall well-being. Embracing winter, getting outdoors and finding joy on the mountain is a powerful reminder that movement can be fun — in all kinds of weather.
Health and wellness aren’t about perfection. They’re about progress, support and finding what works for you — one small habit at a time.
Peace & Love, Cindy
