Fall Vibes

From the Editor

Autumn is in the air.  From mums to pumpkin spice lattes, the signs of the changing season are everywhere. One of my favorite things about living in this part of the country is the seasonal changes. Fall seems to have a special coziness to it. Maybe it’s the crispness in the air every evening or the reintroduction of my favorite hoodies. I love the aesthetic look and smell of Autumn. Knowing that the holidays are right around the corner also adds to my excitement.

Some of our favorite fall activities are going to be a bit different this year. With COVID-19 precautions still in place, it has already been announced that many area fall festivals are either canceled or going virtual. Football fans will be watching from their home screens. Still many of the simplest and greatest  pleasures of the season are not affected, like the aroma of a pumpkin spice candle, a pot of chilli or a favorite cozy blanket.

The political dial is being turned up with more signs popping up on folks’ lawns and at every intersection. The intensity of some political opinions can be stressful.  I believe we can disagree on anything, including politics and candidates and still like and respect one another. Yet in the media, especially the social media, we often only see only the extremes. There will also be a referendum vote on election day. Read Bill Barrow’s feature on page 22 about the upcoming vote on the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state.

In this issue of Shore Local, we are so excited to welcome Meteorologist Dan Skeldon to our team of top columnists. Read Dan’s column on page 6 explaining what could be an extremely active hurricane season this year. Speaking of hurricanes, the ocean is a different beast this time of year with larger swells and frequent rip currents.

The Atlantic City Beach Patrol reported over 1,000 ocean rescues so far this season. The weather has been gorgeous with sunny days and warm water temperatures that are inviting. But please heed the advice of area Beach Patrols and only swim at guarded beaches.
