Whether or not you’re an avid Disney fan, the talent on the ice during its recent run at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall was nothing short of showstopping.
From the twists, turns and jumps, to the acting and the dancing, the cast of Disney on Ice “Magic in the Stars” is full of young talent. And you certainly don’t need to be under the age of 18 to enjoy the show.
I recently had the opportunity to watch one seriously impressive practice and speak with Disney’s Charlotte “Lottie” La Bouff, or as her fellow cast members call her off the ice, Mia.
Mia Saunders is a 20-year-old ice skater from Canada, and the spitting image of Disney’s princess Ariel. Mia took the time for a chat, giving me the scoop about Disney on Ice.
What is it like being a member of the Disney on Ice cast?
It’s honestly so cool. I never saw myself doing this when I was younger, but now that I’m here I can’t picture my life without it. Seeing all the kids’ reactions to our stories melts my heart every day. I love skating and getting to portray characters on the ice – it’s amazing.
When did you start skating?
I started skating when I was 6. I was a competitive skater for around 15 years and when my competitive career was done, I decided to go into shows. And now I’m here – this is my second year and I’m loving it.
What made you want to get into shows after your competitive career was over?
An old friend reminded me that I love making kids happy. I really am a big, like, kid entertainer and my favorite princess was Ariel at the time [that I started doing shows]. [The casting director] said there was a spot for me and I got to portray my favorite character.
What’s your favorite scene or moment in the show?
This season [my favorite scene] is actually really surprising. I would never have picked it. It’s actually the Aladdin and Jasmine scene and the whole ‘Aladdin’ segment.
There’s this part where a million genies come out and you have [stunt skaters] flying, who knows how high. Then you have these beautiful scarf girls dancing with scarves. Then there’s a beautiful pairing with Jasmine and Aladdin at the end that makes my heart melt and almost makes me cry.
What skill, whether show- or ice-related, has been most challenging for you?
So, my background is [as] an ice dancer, and trying to relearn how to jump is honestly the hardest thing in my life. I’m learning how to do a double Axel, and that’s honestly really challenging. Every now and then, it’s the silliest things that are hard, like spirals.
What do you like most about performing in Atlantic City?
The Boardwalk. I’m from Canada so we don’t have the ocean nearby. By going to the Boardwalk and seeing the beautiful sunsets every day – it’s gorgeous. I see why people can stay here forever. After the show tonight I’m excited to walk up to the Boardwalk and just breathe in the air.
