With cold weather setting in, Comfort Now delivered new heating systems to three South Jersey households as part of its annual Holiday Heater Giveaway.

Over several weeks, residents nominated individuals or families in need, sharing brief descriptions of their situations. The company selected three recipients this year.

One recipient was Dana Fariss of Somers Point, nominated by her son. Her home’s heater was 28 years old and failing.

“We were able to install a new heater for Dana on Christmas Eve,” said Bob McAllister of Comfort Now.

Patty Rosie of Absecon also received a new water heater. Rosie said she recently became unemployed and could not afford repairs to her system. She had been using a fireplace and space heaters to warm her home.

“I’m a single mom to a wonderful 12-year-old daughter,” Rosie said. “This help means a lot to us.”

McAllister visited Rosie’s home on Christmas Eve to notify her in person. He said Rosie received the most support during public voting, much of it connected to her church community.

Beth DeVos of Mays Landing was the third recipient. She and her husband, Jon, live in a home built in 1886 and have lived without central heat for 15 years.

“We’re installing a new heating system for Beth and her family next week,” McAllister said.

DeVos said her family has relied on a wood stove and electric space heaters since their boiler failed in 2010. At that time, she lost her job and was unable to afford repairs. DeVos has worked as a registered nurse for 31 years and later suffered an on-the-job injury that added to the family’s financial strain.

“Having central heat will make a big difference for us,” she said.

McAllister said DeVos’ nomination drew strong support.

“We received more than 10 nominations for Beth,” he said.

Comfort Now has operated the Holiday Heater Giveaway for more than 10 years, providing heating assistance to dozens of South Jersey families. The program focuses on keeping homes safe and warm during the winter months.
