Icy, Windy Conditions Expected Through Late This Evening
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (January 3, 2022) – The City of Atlantic City today issued the following update on the City’s response to today’s winter storm, the closure of City Government Offices on Tuesday, January 4, and impacts to City services.
Weather Impacts
Atlantic City experienced a wet wintry mix and high winds beginning in the early hours today. The weather quickly transitioned to a powdery snow fall around midmorning. Forecasters predict the City will continue to experience snow fall and gale force winds through this evening.
As we approach the evening hours, one of the biggest concerns remains the gale force winds. These high winds can easily lift the powdery snow to create snow drifts throughout the City. During this time, roads that were previously plowed will quickly be re-coated with snow. We ask that residents please remain patient as crews work to clear and treat City streets as quickly as possible.
City Response Efforts
To prepare for, and respond to, these harsh conditions, Mayor Marty Small, Sr. ordered the activation of the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 9 a.m. this morning. The Atlantic City Office of Emergency Management will continue to coordinate the City’s response throughout the duration of this winter storm.
The Atlantic City Department of Public Works has completed five full plowing cycles and five salting treatments throughout the City since the crews’ initial deployment began at 4 a.m. today. Crews will continue to plow and treat City roads throughout
the duration of this winter weather event.
The Administration remains connected to the New Jersey Governor’s Office to discuss options and resources available to support the City’s Department of Public Works in plowing and treating all City vehicles.
At the request of the Atlantic City Office of Emergency Management, the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) has authorized the Wave Parking Garage, located at the corner of Mississippi and Fairmount Avenues, to provide free parking for Atlantic City residents and visitors through 5 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4.
Impacts to City Services
With the safety of residents, visitors, and employees in mind, all Atlantic City Government offices will be closed on Tuesday, January 4. Essential personnel assigned to public works, 911 communications, emergency management, police and fire will report for duty at their normal hours or as directed by their supervisor. Pending any further weather updates, City Government offices will resume normal operations on Wednesday, January 5, at 8:30 a.m.
Due to the National Weather Forecast of extreme cold temperatures this evening, the Small Administration has activated the City’s Code Blue Alert tonight, January 3. The Atlantic City Rescue Mission will open its doors through 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 5. Residents are encouraged to be vigilant for neighbors in need of shelter and to continue checking on youth and elderly residents during the colder months.
