Art, Heart & Soul – Celebrate Black History Month at the JCC of Atlantic County

Enjoy live music, original artwork and guest speaker Pastor Collins A. Days, Sr.

Margate, NJ (February 9, 2022) – The Milton & Betty Katz JCC will celebrate Black History Month with an Art Show experience on Thursday, February 17 at 6pm.  This free event, open to the community, will include original artwork from four locally renowned Black artists; Jelishka Maldonado, Janell Jones, Taidora Nelson and Tyrone Hart. The artists will showcase a range of artwork, including sculptors, textiles and oil paintings.

A live music performance from The Eddie Morgan Trio will also be included in the evening’s festivities.  The group is known for their hip, funky alternative from traditional swing and their take on soulful standards.

Guest Speaker, Pastor Collins A. Days, Sr., will lead a discussion on The Relationship of Jews and Blacks in American Society, followed by a question-and-answer session.  In addition to leading his large congregation at Second Baptist Church of Atlantic City, Pastor Days has an extensive history of helping the local community. Approximately 20 years ago, Rev. Days established a Community Development Corporation known as Vision 2000.  This corporation, in which Days is the president, has developed home ownership programs, created the Civil Rights Garden, aided in building senior citizens apartments, instituting minority-owned businesses, and establishing low-income housing. He serves on the Board at the John Brooks Recovery Center, which offers substance abuse treatment services in Atlantic City for New Jersey residents.  Rev. Days is also the public face and President of the Board of Directors for the Atlantic City Long Term Recovery Group (ACLTRG), which is one of the more successful private Hurricane Sandy relief programs in the State.

“We’re thrilled to offer this program to our members and the greater community.  This type of partnership with a community leader like Pastor Days and local artists really speaks to the inclusion that our facility stands for.  We celebrate and embrace our cultural differences.  We honor the work of these artists.  We will display their pieces for two months, not just Black History Month, because we believe that diverse artists and voices should be on display.  We are all part of the same ‘kehillah”, or community”, said Marg Rosenblatt, CEO of the Katz JCC.

Guests will enjoy wine and hors d’voures during the evening and a portion of the proceeds from the art sales will benefit the JCC of Atlantic County.  All attendees are required to wear a mask and must RSVP by Tuesday, February 15 to Brian Adler, badler@jccatlantic.org.
