Atlantic City Native Justin Figueroa to headline the Showboat Showcase Championship Event September 24th
Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City is bringing Amateur Boxing to the Atrium on Friday, September 24 with fifteen exciting Championship Bouts. Weigh-in for the free event, dubbed the Showboat Showcase Championship, will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the first bout starting at 7:30 p.m..
Atlantic City native and Holy Spirit graduate Justin Figueroa will be fighting Nijay Brown of Baltimore, Maryland in a rematch. The 22-year-old Figueroa has been competing since he was around 11 years old. While he was at Holy Spirit, Figueroa played football and wrestled, but boxing has always been his first love. “I want to bring boxing back to Atlantic City and represent and be an inspiration for my hometown,” said Figueroa, who competes in the USA Amateur Boxing Circuit. “I hope to continue to gain experience and turn pro soon.”
The Amateur Showcase is being brought to Showboat by New Jersey Native Jacklyn Atkins. “Coach Jackie” is an accomplished athlete in her own right, having been inducted into the New Jersey Track and Field Hall of Fame. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Atkins founded the New Jersey Give a Kid a Dream Program, which leverages the focus and discipline of boxing to engage youth while supporting them with the challenges they face today. Atkin’s goal is for youth to become champions of life while living a healthy, productive lifestyle inside and outside of the ring.
Amateur Boxing is part of the National Association of USA Boxing and features future Olympians as they engage in three rounds of action with fast, quick, clean hits. USA Boxing’s goal is to develop Olympians and future professional boxers. “These boxers are getting experience to qualify for the Olympics,” said Atkins. “Others will turn pro. This is where pros come from: they have a stellar career as amateurs before turning pro.”
Showboat Hotel is committed to investing in the community as well as investing in the health and wellness of Atlantic City. Showboat will be offering a competitive boxing training program and a boxing fitness training program this fall.
