Your Never Too Old or Young to Try Something New

There is something exhilarating about throwing an axe, a primal satisfaction in doing something that upon first glance seems wild and dangerous. I have always been an adventure enthusiast though, so from the minute I heard about it, I was all in.

On Friday night, I grabbed some friends and headed to AC Axe and Pub at Steel Pier in Atlantic City.  Like many of us, by the time Friday rolls around, I’m more than ready to blow off some steam. I couldn’t think of a more exciting way to do it.

Axe-throwing reminds me of an extreme version of darts. It’s a game whereby you throw an axe at a large wooden board with targets painted on, and score points based on where your axe lands. I haven’t played darts in a long time so I wasn’t sure how I would do.

If you have some trepidation about the combination of people drinking alcohol and throwing axes, as many do, don’t worry.  It is very safe! There are fenced in lanes so wild axes sailing through the air is impossible. The axes are carefully controlled  and an instructor is always nearby guiding you where to stand and how to properly throw your axe.

Knowing my own limits, I decided to skip the alcohol and go right for the axes. After some instructions and a couple practice shots, I got lucky and hit the bulls eye! It felt great to challenge myself to do something new and different. Even in January, our “dead season” down the shore, there are always opportunities to try something new.

Urban axe throwing is a growing trend. Westecunk Axe Throwing also recently opened in Atlantic City next to Little Water Distillery.

The first axe-throwing bar in North America is believed to have started in Toronto in 2011. Now, axe throwing is sweeping the country with venues and leagues popping up everywhere. I recently heard of some taking it a step furthur, allowing patrons to post pictures of the most disliked people in their lives, often their exs bosses, or politicians to aim for.

You’re never too old or young to learn something new. Many of us get very busy in the summer months so winter can be the perfect time to challenge ourselves to try something new. If you like more information about axe throwing, visit acaxeandpub.com or westecunkaxe.com

Peace & Love,
