What’s Happening in Ocean City: Ocean City Boardwalk Goes to the Dogs This Weekend

The third annual Howl-O-Ween Parade and Dog Day will invite dogs and their owners to enjoy a day of fun on the Boardwalk on Saturday, Oct. 21, and this year the event will be expanded to allow dogs again on Sunday, Oct. 22.

Leashed dogs will be permitted on the Boardwalk from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 21, and activities will include dog-specific vendors at the Ocean City Music Pier, photo-op stations and the Humane Society’s announcement of Ocean City’s “Pet of the Year.” The event will allow owners to shop for dog treats, order custom engraved dog tags, shoot photos with Santa and much more.

The “Howl-O-Ween” Parade and dog costume contest on Saturday is for people and dogs of all ages. Contestants are encouraged to dress themselves and their pets in zany Halloween costumes in the spirit of the season. The Humane Society’s “Pet of the Year” will be the event’s grand marshal. Advance online registration (ocnj.recdesk.com) ends at 4 p.m. Oct. 18. Day-of registration begins at 1 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Sports and Civic Center (Sixth Street and Boardwalk). The parade begins at 3 p.m., and the procession is from Sixth Street to 12th Street on the Boardwalk.

Each registrant will be limited to registering two dogs, if more dogs need to be registered they will need to be registered on another account. The event is hosted by the City of Ocean City, the Boardwalk Merchants Association and the Humane Society of Ocean City with proceeds benefiting the Humane Society.

The timeline for the Saturday events includes:

·         9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Dogs permitted on the Boardwalk

·         11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Free photos with Santa in a lifeguard boat at the 11th Street Pavilion

·         12 p.m.: Pet of the Year announcement at the Ocean City Music Pier (Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace)

·         1 p.m.: Day-of parade registration and pre-registration packet pickup starts at the Ocean City Sports and Civic Center (Sixth Street and Boardwalk)

·         3 p.m.: Boardwalk parade starts at Sixth Street and continues to 12th Street

Dogs will be permitted on the Boardwalk again from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22.

SINATRA SHOW CONTINUES AT MUSIC PIER

“My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra” will take center stage at the Ocean City Music Pier at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday (Oct. 20 and 21) with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Oct. 22. Presented by the Ocean City Theatre Company, “My Way” celebrates the mystique of Frank Sinatra and the unforgettable music that made him famous.

LIGHTHOUSE CHALLENGE INCLUDES OCEAN CITY LIFE SAVING STATION

The Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey is an annual event that takes place the third weekend of October each year. The challenge is to visit 10 land-based lighthouses, three life saving stations, one museum, and one virtual site over the two-day weekend. The challenge includes the historic Life Saving Station No. 30 in Ocean City at Fourth Street and Atlantic Avenue.

The challenge route covers the Atlantic Coast from Sandy Hook to Cape May and the Delaware Bay and River Coast from Cape May to Paulsboro. The sites will be open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21 and 22. SURF FISHING TOURNAMENT ENCOURAGES YOUNG ANGLERS

The Ocean City Fishing Club’s 54th annual Surf Fishing Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 21 hopes to lure more young anglers in addition to the fishing clubs and adult participants who traditionally compete.
