Village Grande at Little Mill in Egg Harbor Township

Holds Drive-By Memorial Day Parade to Honor its Veterans

On Memorial Day, there is usually a parade and a presentation at Village Grande at Little Mill, an over-55 community of 300 homes in Egg Harbor Township, to honor the veterans living there. Many of the residents would gather at the Village Grande Club-house to attend these Memorial Day ceremonies. But this year, that wasn’t possible because of the coronavirus situation.

So Marge Hasher, who has organized the Village Grande Memorial Day celebration for over 15 years, decided to have a “car parade” around the community instead. At 2 o’clock in the afternoon on Memorial Day, a procession of more than a dozen cars, slowly made its way through the community, led by an Egg Harbor Township police car with its siren blaring.  The parade cars were decorated in red, white and blue, some with U.S. flags flying, and with horns honking in tribute. The veterans gathered in front of their homes, and they waved and saluted as the cars passed by and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” was played on a public address system.

“We wanted to let our veterans know that their service was and is greatly appreciated, and that they have not been forgotten,” said Marge Hasher, a Village Grande resident herself. “Virus or no virus, I couldn’t let Memorial Day pass without doing something to honor our veterans. This was our way of demonstrating that we remember them, that we care, and that we appreciate the sacrifices they have made for our country.”
