Upcoming Events Including MLK Weekend

The Light  By Raymond Tyler

Happy 2020 Everyone! I pray that wherever you are, you and your family are having a happy, healthy and safe new year.

Since we won’t be together again until after The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Weekend: I decided to let you in on a few great events coming up around then.

The Light’s Annual 2020 Martin Luther King Celebration

Friday January 17th at 6pm. The Labelle Art Gallery 300 White Horse Rd, Voorhees, NJ

Each year we (The Light) sponsors a celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year we are organizing our event at the beautiful new Labelle Art Gallery. The evening will include spirituals from April Williams, positive Hip Hop by Love Me No More, spoken word from Serena Joy, Nettie Long and more. We will also be taping The Light at the gallery as guest speakers discuss how Dr. King still impacts their life. Admission is free and all are welcome.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Read-In

Saturday January 18th at 1pm. In The Atlantic County Atrium next to the Atlantic City Free Public Library.

This marks The AC Library’s 7th annual read-in. This year staff and special guests will read from speeches such as “I’ve Been To The MountainTop” and Dr. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”  Also on January 21st-25th in honor of Dr. King the library will have “Food For Fines”. People with overdue materials can donate food in lieu of paying their fines.

WDAS Winter White Affair

Saturday Night January 18th at 9pm

Harrahs Casino Atlantic City

The Mighty  radio station FM 105.3 WDAS is invading AC. Since becoming Mayor, it doesn’t look like Mayor Marty Small will have the time to have his annual All Black Affair. So to save our holiday weekend, enter WDAS with legendary DJ’s Gary O and Doc B. WDAS is suggesting winter white as dress. What I do know is that the music will be the best hip hop and R&B that Philly has to offer.

The All-Stars of Hip Hop Concert and After Party

Sunday January 19th

Each year during The King Holiday Weekend, the legends of hip hop come and showcase their skills at The James Whelan Boardwalk Hall. This year’s lineup features artists that made the 1980’s a great decade for hip hop music. KRS-One headlines with Doug.E Fresh, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane and MC Lyte.

The after party will continue the good music vibe until 4am over at Bally’s Casino.
