Twelve Activities of Christmas to Enjoy

By Sarah Fertsch

Thanksgiving has passed, and the Christmas Spirit has fallen upon us like a snowflake blowing through the winter sky. It’s very exciting, and because we only have one month to celebrate, it’s crucial to plan to fit in as many holiday delights as humanly possible. Our area has plenty of things to choose from. Like the song, The 12 days of Christmas, here are 12 fun activities to enjoy this holiday season.

Ice Skate at Vinter Wonderland, Renault Winery’s spectacular event

Gather your family and friends and check out the stunning lights, warm brews, and live music at the local vineyard. You can ice skate, sit by the fire, or take pictures on the beautiful grounds. And maybe Santa will stop by, too.

Drive Through the Live Nativity at Zion United Methodist Church

Travel back in time and witness the Christmas miracle at this Egg Harbor Township church. You’ll find Mary and Joseph, Baby Jesus, Shepherds and Angels, and even live animals! It’s a great opportunity to reflect on what Christmas means spiritually.

Shop Small on Asbury Avenue in Ocean City

Trust me, you’ll feel like you’re in a Hallmark movie. Browse boutiques and specialty shops under the garland lights and wreaths. You can even enjoy a horse & carriage ride!

Watch the Light Show at the Smithville Village

Spend an evening at the adorable shopping district and eat great food, purchase unique items, and even talk to a Christmas tree! The light show is iconic, and will feature songs like “Carol of the Bells” and “Jingle Bell Rock.” Fun for all ages!

Take Your Children to Storybook Land

Walkthrough the incredible fantasy lights (they have over 1 million lights!) and meet Santa and Mrs. Claus. Photograph your children in awe at the spinning rides, storybook scenes, and musical shows.

Paint Ornaments and Christmas Trees at Glazed Over

This pottery shop has a great selection of holiday pieces to paint and fire in the kiln. Listen to Christmas music as you peacefully paint vintage trucks, nativity scenes, Santas, and trees. Perfect for gifting, too!

Spend a Day in Cape May

It’s a Dickens Christmas on the Washington Square Mall. Meet townsfolk from long ago, sip a warm hot chocolate, and pick up local gifts. Ride in a horse-drawn carriage, too! Winter Wonderland at Congress Hall is worth visiting as well.

Stop By Christmas at the Mansion

On December 4th, Shore Local will be hosting a holiday festival and tree-lighting ceremony at the Somers Mansion. Browse vendors and food trucks, sit on Santa’s lap, and appreciate music from local artists and school choirs.

Watch “The Nutcracker” at Stockton University

The Atlantic City Ballet will be performing the memorable show throughout December. Introduce your children to the power of dance and feel the magic of the sugarplum fairies and animation of the nutcracker.

Attend the Holly Jolly Holiday Party at the Flanders Hotel

On December 12th, have breakfast with Santa at the historic hotel in Ocean City. There will be performances of classic holiday songs and beautiful decor.

Take pictures by the Christmas Tree on the Beach

This pop-up icon has brought joy to hundreds of families locally and beyond. There’s a tree on the 55th street beach as well as 1st street (both in Ocean City). Write names of loved ones on clamshells and place them under the tree. Even Dog Beach has a tree for you and your pet to visit. What a memorable experience!

Savor a Christmas Cookie at Ward’s or Chester’s Bakery

Nothing tastes better than a gingerbread man-made with love. Both offer a variety of cookies, perfect for bringing home and enjoying with loved ones. Yum!
