The circus came to Ocean City in 1915

A Look Back
By Fred Miller

An ad in the July 22, 1915 Ocean City newspaper reported the Al. F. Wheeler’s Circus was coming to town on Saturday,9 July 31. It was the first two-ring circus to perform in Ocean City.

The Wheeler show was huge. A total of 32 wagons came over the 9th Street bridge, turned left on Bay Avenue and stopped at the showgrounds on Simpson Avenue. There, the tent was put up and the area was prepared for the colorful show.

The ad told folks what they would see if they came to the circus: world’s best acrobats, human merry-go-round, 20 funny clowns, a daredevil riding down a 100-foot ladder on a big wheel, the king of the desert, and many more acts.

Both the 2:00 and 8:00 shows were sold out.
