The Arc of Atlantic County Celebrates Direct Support Professionals

Direct support professionals or DSPs, play an essential role in supporting and empowering individuals to live meaningful lives in their communities. During Direct Support Professional Recognition Week (September 11-17, 2022), The Arc of Atlantic County will celebrate the important work DSPs provide to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in Atlantic County.

Maria Walter, a community integration facilitator at The Arc of Atlantic County, shared how rewarding it is to help others reach their goals. “I really enjoy making a difference in the individual’s life, each and every day,” said Walter. “It feels good knowing you’re helping someone realize their full potential.”

More than 30,000 people across New Jersey work as direct support professionals, according to the Division of Developmental Disabilities. The 200 DSPs who work at The Arc of Atlantic County provide services with compassion and dedication. From help with daily activities and life skills, to vocational and independent living supports, direct support professionals are cheerleaders, job coaches, cooks, drivers, advocates, and sometimes family, to the individuals they support.

“Their commitment to helping others live full and happy lives is building an inclusive community where everyone feels valued and represented,” said Scott Hennis, CEO, The Arc of Atlantic County. “During DSP Recognition Week, and every day, we are grateful to our direct support professionals and for the life-changing support they provide to the individuals and families we serve.”

The week-long celebration will include daily prize giveaways from local businesses, including WOLF Fitness, The Crab Trap, TacocaT – Margate, Tony Beef, Mike’s Pasta House, Johnson’s Popcorn, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa – Somers Point, and more. The community is also encouraged to share photos, videos and expressions of gratitude by posting to The Arc’s virtual recognition board. The celebration will culminate at The Arc’s Day Habilitation program, located at 6550 Delilah Road, Suite 101, Egg Harbor Township, on Friday, September 16, as Kaylee McGuire, Deputy Commissioner for Aging and Disability Services; Jonathan Seifried, Assistant Commissioner of the Division of Developmental Disabilities; and Thomas Baffuto, Executive Director of The Arc of New Jersey, present a Proclamation in recognition of The Arc’s direct support professionals. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the facilities and program, engage with participants and speak with DSPs about their work.

“The Arc is fortunate to have so many skilled direct support professionals who are passionate about their work,” said Lynn Lippert, Human Resources Director, The Arc of Atlantic County. “Direct Support Professional Recognition Week provides the perfect opportunity to share how integral DSPs are to enhancing the lives of those we serve.”

As The Arc of Atlantic County continues to grow, so does the need for special people to join the agency’s caring and committed team of direct support professionals. Full and part-time positions are available. Opportunities for career development, paid training and robust benefits are included.
