Subscription Box Gift Ideas for Kids

By Marci Lutsky

Thanksgiving is over and now it’s time to get down to business – holiday shopping business that is.  Are you a wake-up early on Black Friday kind of person?  Me neither.  The thought of waking up before the sun comes up to wait in lines makes me cringe.  When it comes to holiday shopping I try to shop locally by supporting small businesses or skip the lines and do most of my shopping online.  Shopping for kids can be tricky because you don’t want to get them one more toy that will end up untouched in a toy bin.

Enter the subscription box! Are you familiar with subscription boxes?  I’m a big fan of everything from clothes shopping (Stitch Fix) to outdoor gear (Cairn).  The way a subscription box works is that you sign up to receive a box of goodies in the mail. You choose the frequency. It can be monthly, bi-monthly or less frequent.  What makes subscription boxes fun is that you never know exactly what you are going to get, though you can make certain requests, and it shows up at your door when you may have forgotten that it’s coming.  So, it’s really the gift that keeps on giving.  Here are some great subscription box gift ideas for your kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews.  There is a bunch to choose from so you can really tailor it to what your special someone would like.

Kiwi Crate offers STEAM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities for children ages newborn to 16 is a great one.  Children can create and explore through a variety of fun activities.  Prices range from $25 for one month to $205 for 12 months.

Green Kid Crafts is another fun one that provides kids with science and art projects for kids ages two to 10.  We tried this one a few years ago and my kids loved the activities, which included making slime and magnet animal friends.  Each box has a different theme and features eco-friendly materials made in the USA.  Prices range from $25 for one month to $215 for a year.

If you have little chefs who enjoy cooking, Cooking’s Cool is a great gift.  We tried this last year and my twins loved it.  Each kit comes with a book, some cooking utensils and recipes.  We made mini lasagnas using wonton wrappers that the kids gobbled up.  I really like this kit because it was created by a Philadelphia woman and because the kits are all seasonal, which cooking should be.  Each kit is $26.00

Little Passports is great for children who are interested in learning about different cultures.  Included in the boxes you will find activity books, stickers, souvenirs and more to help little ones learn about other parts of the world.  Recommended ages for Little Passports are 3 to 12.  Prices range from $19 for one month to $203 for twelve months.

Other great subscription boxes to consider this holiday season are Raddish Kids, Food Stirs and Skip and Play.

When the grandparents start asking for gift ideas for my kids, I’m going to give them this list and tell them to pick one.  I know my kids would enjoy any of these!
