Ocean City’s First Automobile Dealer

By Fred Miller

One hundred years ago, May 28, 1921,Edward G. Kurtz opened Ocean City’s first automobile dealership. He advertised “The modern car dealership has arrived with a formal showroom, a well-stocked parts department, and a quality service center.” The location was on the corner of 12th Street and Asbury Avenue.

Edward G. Kurtz used floats in the Baby Parade to advertise his Ford dealership.

Kurtz told people, “Now is the time to buy! Time payments–one third down, balance in ten monthly payments. Do not put it off; enjoy your FORD now.Let us demonstrate without obligation to you. Consider our service. We are here to keep your car on the street.”

People listened to Kurtz and many bought their first car in 1921 from him. The Model T touring car cost $355, while the top of the line model could be purchased for $645. Kurtz reported 70% of cars sold were purchased with some sort of financing.

Kurtz was so successful he to opened a second location at 14 Atlantic Avenue.

This top of the line Model T sold for $645 in 1921.
