Ocean City High School Senior Offers Free Hair and Makeup for Prom-Goers

Promise Parlor ensures that every Ocean City High School senior looks fabulous for the most important day of their high school career: Prom.

The organization was created three years ago by Mary Grace Jamison and is now run by Natalie Argento, Miss Teen Ocean City. Argento says she’s excited to pass along this tradition and ensure that everyone who wants to go to prom can feel confident and beautiful.

“Personally, I’ve seen so many kids spend over $250 on hair and makeup alone, and with dresses, flowers, transportation and photos, prom becomes really expensive,” said Argento. “Everyone wants to look their best, and giving people that opportunity is great for the community.”

On May 14th (the day of Ocean City High School’s prom) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, OCHS students can visit Cutting Edge Salon in Upper Township, where tens of certified hairdressers and beauty experts volunteer to provide glam and star power. Beauty school students also donate their time and skills to practice on real hair and faces.

Every year, instead of paying for hair and makeup, students are encouraged to donate to an important cause. Jamison, the founder of Promise Parlor, raised funds for the Ronald McDonald House. Argento says she struggled to find a 2022 cause. “My friend recently passed away and was a huge lover of animals,” said Argento. “So this year all proceeds will support the Ocean City Humane Society, which is a no-kill animal shelter.”

Local businesses have donated to Promise Parlor to help the island’s humane society. Island Gypsy, Ta-Da boutiques, and Spoon and Sip have supported Promise Parlor. After Argento graduates from OCHS, junior McKenna Fleming will run Promise Parlor and choose a charitable cause. Ms. Morrison, the dance teacher at OCHS, serves as the faculty advisor for the organization and makes sure everything runs smoothly.

Argento plans on attending Arcadia University in the fall and majoring in criminology and psychology. The 18-year-old is excited to compete for Miss Ocean City this summer. For prom, Argento will wear a teal-green dress with gold jewelry and will dance the night away with friends.
