Learning to Rest

Letter from the editor

My dad always reminds me of my go-getter nature. Admittedly, it’s usually on our long phone calls, after I’ve shared my plans for the week. “Cindy, you never stop moving!” He’d laugh, and I’d smile.

Because it’s true! I have written and edited and poured my heart and soul into Shore Local, loved surfers of all abilities through Heart of Surfing, and rose to the challenge of motherhood with three grown kids and three crazy dogs. Oh, and I never forget the gym!  You’ll find me in yoga almost every morning of the week. I visit my daughters in Harrisburg, walk the dogs, and deliver newspapers all in the same day.

But this year, Bob and I decided to do the unprecedented: take a break. Because of the seasonal nature of life by the shore, we published our most recent issue a few weeks later than usual. We went to the beach, visited friends, and celebrated everything we have loved and lost in 2020.

And I have to admit, resting was hard. What does it mean to not have deadlines, or family obligations, or goals?

In yoga, I am reminded of the importance of balance. It’s amazing how so much strength can come from stillness. As I hold a pose, with arms trembling and sweat dripping, I know that I am growing stronger. They say that slower exercises, like yoga, strengthen muscles faster than cardio or crossfit. It makes you more flexible, too.

You can only get so strong by running. You have to choose to be present. Withstand the pressure. Fight to be still.

I find that the same principles of yoga apply to life. As I learn to rest, I discover who I am (no longer simply distracting myself) and I become less rigid in my routine. It’s okay if I wake up a little later some mornings. Maybe I’ll take more walks on the beach or spend the afternoon in Cape May. Maybe I’ll hold my husband’s hand a moment longer, play more chess with my girls, and reflect on how God has blessed me more than I’ve realized.

This past year has taught me that life is such a gift. We are all meant for more than productivity or efficiency. Sometimes we need to take the long way. And I think the road less traveled is a little more beautiful.

Peace & Love,
Cindy
