“I see happiness in the faces of people of all generations donating to the Red Kettle Campaign,” says volunteer Gail Aikens who

rings the Salvation Army Red Kettle bell six days a week at the entrance of Boscov’s department store in Egg Harbor Township. She volunteers from 11 am to 7 pm and this is her 5th season doing so. “It is a blessing for me to be able to help others,” says Gail, with a smile.

The Salvation Army, located on Texas Avenue in Atlantic City offers a haven for those in need, not only in Atlantic City but in the surrounding area as well. It is led by Captains Frank and Shana Piccotto, both of which are ordained Pastors.

Imagine being hungry or homeless and not having any resources to get food for yourself or your family. Sadly many people struggle with this, sometimes in conjunction with mental illness, addictions and/or human trafficking.

Everyday, the  Salvation Army assists people with these basic needs. They offer a food bank that is open each morning and afternoon and a soup kitchen that offers hot meals daily. There are showering and laundry programs, counseling, and after school childcare programs. Additionally, the Salvation Army provides summer camp experiences for children and sober living assistance for adults battling addictions.

“It is all about sharing a love of God to help the community each and everyday,” said Captain Frank Picciotto.  “It is our goal to be a positive influence and a light in our community.”

On Saturday, December 1st,  Boscov’s teamed up with the Salvation Army and placed an Angel tree near their front entrance in the men’s department. Shoppers are encouraged to choose an angel and in return bring a new, unwrapped gift to be donated those need.

The Red Kettle Campaign is well underway and their goal for this year is $100,000, which is needed to continue to serve the community. If you would like to help, in addition to the red kettles, you can always send a check to the Salvation Army, 22 Texas Avenue,  Atlantic City, NJ

The Salvation Army reports their food pantry is running low and welcomes donations of non perishable food items. In response Sunny Sunoco in Margate has a car parked at its location at 7770 Ventnor Avenue in Margate and encourages people to “Stuff the Car” with non perishable food that will be delivered to the Salvation Army.
