Here’s why you should make the switch to whole wheat pasta

Whole wheat pasta is certainly a healthier choice than white pasta. It’s packed with nutrients such as protein, fiber, iron, magnesium and zinc. One cup of whole wheat pasta has about 8 grams of protein.

Because it’s made with the whole grain kernel, it retains those properties that make it most healthy and desirable. It’s good for weight loss as it contains more fiber and nutrients than other pasta varieties. Because of the high amounts of nutrients, antioxidants and phytochemicals, it has the potential to act in an anti-inflammatory manner, which can help with chronic disease.

Whole wheat pasta is less processed because it’s made from whole wheat durum flour, which means it retains the fiber and all the other nutrients in the whole grain.

The brain gets energy from glucose which is found in carbohydrates. Complex carbs found in starchy foods like whole grain bread, pasta and rice, are better for us because they release energy slowly and help the brain to function in a stable way.

Switching to a whole grain pasta can help lower cholesterol and triglycerides because of the high fiber content.

You can find this recipe in my cookbook, “Nancy’s Recipes for Life,” available in my Linwood office location and Capella’s Oil and Vinegar Store in Ocean City.

Easy Poached Eggs
With Pasta

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups whole wheat pasta
  • 1 cup no salt added marinara sauce
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 cups fresh spinach

Directions

Place a pot of water on the stove to boil. Measure out pasta and set aside. Pour the sauce into a small skillet and turn heat to medium low.

When sauce starts to bubble, carefully crack eggs on to the top. Cover and cook until eggs have reached the desired doneness.

Meanwhile, add the spinach to the pasta just before you drain it. Stir and drain well. Divide spinach and pasta between two bowls. Top with one egg and half the sauce.

This meal is cheap and tasty! Serves 2
