Egg Harbor Township BMX began their season with the Jack Frost Classic BMX Race 2021, held at Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, March 20th.
The season opener drew riders from all across the state and of all age, including groups, for boys, girls, men and women from under 5 to over 50.
Egg Harbor Township became the first track to reopen in New Jersey. Steve Adams, EHT BMX president, had to make a number of changes due to Covid-19. In preparation for race day, team tents were relocated to minimize crowds and registration was done online to avoid long lines of people gathering closely. Masks were also encouraged for spectators as many people tend to gather next to the fence surrounding the track.
“It’s a wonderful day,” Adams said. “It really is amazing to see the smiles on all the kids’ faces and be back on the track again.”
The season usually starts in March, but it had to be pushed back to July last year because of the pandemic.
The event consisted of BMX riders from as young as 2 years old to adults flying around a dirt course, catching air and twisting around turns and hills. Racers competed in groups of eight, called a “moto,” based on age, gender, proficiency and wheel size.
Adams is confident EHT BMX will be in for another successful season.
