Cutting the Cord on Cable TV

Things You Should Know about Streaming TV

By Steffen Klenk

Television has evolved so much over the past decade. With the invention of 4K technology and new technologies, it can be hard deciding how to watch your favorite shows. With new streaming services popping up left-and-right, it can be hard to choose the right package. Some have decided to ditch their cable subscriptions altogether in favor of streaming TV. Before you make the switch, there are a few things you should know.

Streaming TV has only been around for a short time. Netflix was one of the first platforms to join the market in 2007 when the company began streaming TV and movies online for a small monthly fee. Since then, the streaming market has expanded to include Prime Video, Hulu, and a slew of other services, catered to all tastes. By 2010, the Smart TV was released, allowing easier access to programs via wi-fi.

These days, people are constantly looking for ways to save money. If you’ve been thinking about dropping your cable TV subscription, you’re not alone. It is estimated that over 6.5 million households will cut the cord this year alone. That leaves about 77 million cable customers, a 7.5% drop. Since 2014, 23% of homes have cut the cord. There are many alternatives to cable to choose from.

There are many ways to get TV service. Just like having a cable box, the first thing you will need is a device that will allow you to access the live networks you’re looking for. Most smart TVs will already come equipped with popular streaming apps, such as Netflix, built-in. If you don’t have a smart TV, a set-top Roku box or streaming stick is the perfect option for all your viewing needs. A Roku Express streaming stick works perfectly with any TV and it’s easy to install. With models as low as $30, it’s worth the deal.

When it comes to the type of packages you want to purchase, consider bundling. Start with a live TV package that works for you. There are many streaming services available. If you’re looking for basic local channels, Locast might be your best option. You can sign up for free or choose a donation option. As of October 2020, the most affordable option on the market is Sling TV, with service starting at $30 and you can cancel at any time. Hulu also offers many options to their customers, with over 60 channels of content, including local channels and cloud DVR, so you can take your programs with you.

The options for on-demand TV and movies are endless. New services are popping up every single day. Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services on the market today. HBO Max is one of the newest offerings available, providing access to the network’s entire lineup of programming and movies, along with original content. Peacock, which launched over the summer, has hundreds of movies and TV shows to choose from, along with exclusive late-night programs and live streaming channels. The service is available for free with premium subscriptions available.

My recommendation is to review all of your options. Consider all of the shows you watch consistently, and then find the best package(s) that work best for you and your wallet. We live in a world where streaming television and on-demand programs are the new norm. Finding what works for your everyday lifestyle and pocketbook is up to you.
