Comfort Food

The cool weather prompts our taste buds to enjoy comforting food. They usually consist of high fat, high carb and fatty acids. Common comfort foods are cheeseburgers, french fries, candy, pastry and chocolate. Even foods that are healthy like salmon, tuna and nuts are comforting due to the high fatty acids. When you ask someone what their favorite comfort food is, pizza seems to be a common top favorite. Usually chocolate comes in second, and then Mac and cheese, cornbread or pasta finish. When adults are emotionally stressed, they often turn to these comfort foods to make it all better. Certain foods have been associated with security in our childhood. Remember when you fell down and scraped your knees? Mom and Dad maybe gave you something good to eat and all the tears went away. Maybe mom’s chicken noodle soup or a lollipop helped.

Comfort foods not just taste good but actually lessen the impact of stress hormones. Eating something sweet or starchy releases serotonin, which makes us feel calmer and decreases the stress hormone, cortisol. Food can make us feel better and heal us in a psychological way. Healthy foods can do that as well.

Please enjoy this healthy comfort food recipe from my cookbook “Nancy’s Recipes for Life,” available at my Linwood office location and Capellas Oil and Vinegar Store in Ocean City.
