Families gathered at the Huntington Avenue beach in Margate, N.J. on September 16 for a Rosh Hashanah family service followed by Tashlich, the casting away of sins.
Rabbi Michael L. Feshbach and Cantor Rhoda J. Harrison sounded the shofar, following the traditional pattern of calls for the holiday. Children had a chance to sound their own toy shofars, and the whole group joined in song and prayer.
The service continued at the water’s edge as families threw pieces of bread into the waves. Tashlich is a custom of casting away one’s sins during the High Holidays. Worshippers symbolically throw bread into a body of water, thus starting the New Year with a clean slate.
