Atlanticare Staff and Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City Members Shoot Hoops, Discuss Healthcare Careers

Members of the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City Teen Center’s Healthcare Careers Club took on Team AtlantiCare during a special game of hoops October 13 at the club in Atlantic City. The teens had the opportunity to discuss healthcare careers one-on-one with AtlantiCare physicians, medical residents, medical students and staff before and after the game.

The event was one way AtlantiCare is partnering with the BGCAC to assist young people in learning about—and preparing for—careers in healthcare by giving members a backdoor look at career paths.

“Our partnership with AtlantiCare is giving young people valuable, ‘on-the-court’ experiences, about various roles,” said Stephanie Koch, MSW, chief executive officer, Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City.

“Together we’re making it fun and engaging for teens to learn about career paths and plan for their futures,” said Christian Ragland, MPA, assistant vice president, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, AtlantiCare.

BGCAC members ages 13 to 18 who are interested in healthcare careers visit AtlantiCare’s hospital campus and other sites throughout the year. They meet leaders, providers and staff in to learn about clinical and non-clinical career paths. Through these interactions, youth learn skills they can cross over to all areas of their lives.

Both teams said the game was a slam-dunk-opportunity to network, socialize, and exercise. Final score was 46-37, BGCAC.
