Adoptions Up, Renovations Underway at OC Humane Society

Since the onset of the pandemic, the Humane Society of Ocean City has seen an outpouring of support from the community. Volunteers have stepped up to provide  essential supplies for shelter operations.

The generosity of its donors, and volunteers, has allowed the Humane Society to purchase much-needed supplies, such as cleaning supplies, dog and cat food, gloves, trash bags and other essential goods. In addition, the shelter has undergone a complete remodel of their facility. New facilities include a renovated cat room, spacious play yard and updated kennels. These new facilities have enriched the lives of animals, according to Executive Director,  Bill Hollingsworth.

Last year’s Virtual Campout fundraiser raised more than $3,500 for shelter operations. Recently, Jilly’s Arcade in Ocean City hosted an on-site fundraiser, with $1,000 raised. In addition, Manco & Manco Pizza contributed over $1,000.

During the height of the pandemic, many animal shelters throughout the country reported an increase in the number of adoptions. Shelter Animals Count, an organization that tracks shelter and rescue activity, noted a 15% rise in pet adoptions last year. Over 26,000 shelter pets found new homes in 2020 than the year before. At the Humane Society of Ocean City, the number of adoptions went up dramatically, with over 100 shelter animals finding new homes with loving families.

Over the past twelve months, HSOC staff has noticed a dramatic change in animal behavior, with decreased levels of stress among its resident cats and dogs. Jen Garraty, resident staff member, notes that fewer concentration of people and volunteers have contributed to the change. “The cats are much more settled and happier now. Cats we normally only see at the end of the day, when it’s quiet, have been out all day.”

The environment has allowed its resident cats to move freely. HSOC Executive Director Bill Hollingsworth says once restrictions are lifted, the shelter will have a gradual opening to get its resident pets adjusted to the change, and to preserve the health and safety of the staff that tend and care for them. “It’s like Christmas Day, where you open up a lot of gifts, and it can be overstimulating.” To ensure the welfare and safety of its pets, the shelter is planning to resume its volunteer program and allow visitors to return under new guidance, as restrictions are lifted.

For over 50 years, the dedicated staff at the Humane Society of Ocean City has remained committed to serving the local community. The non-profit organization provides a high level of compassion and resources to animals in need throughout the region. For every dollar that is donated, $.93 goes back to programs and services for the homeless animals in their care.

Guests who wish to visit the Humane Society of Ocean City must call ahead to schedule an appointment. The shelter is located just off of Tennessee Avenue at 1 Shelter Road. To learn more about HSOC or to make a donation, visit hsocnj.org or call 609-398-9500.
