1936 Doubles Rowing Race

A Look Back
By Fred Miller

“Kelly Cup Won by Carey, Drozdov” was the front page headline in the August 17, 1936, Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger. The article began, “In one of the weirdest and wildest boat race that has ever been staged here, John Carey and Olaf Drozdov won the mile championship of the local patrol for the third straight year, Saturday night, and so became co-owners of the John B. Kelly trophy.”

Norman Blackman and Chris Bentham finished in second place, and Al Okavage and Bob Wallace placed third.

Seven years later, Jack Kelly Jr., left, won the OCBP doubles race rowing with Sims Drain.

The article continued reporting on what made the 17th annual doubles boat race “one of the weirdest and wildest.”

The trophies were presented by Mayor Joseph G. Champion, John B. Kelly and Jack Kelly Jr.

Fred Miller, OCBP historian, will be the speaking about Jack Kelly Jr. at the Ocean City Historial Museum’s Summer Lecture Series on July 7, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. The program will be held in the Ocean City Public Library’s Lecture Hall, 1735 Simpson Avenue.
