The community is invited to a family Purim celebration on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Beth Israel, 2501 Shore Road, Northfield, N.J. Rabbi Michael L. Feshbach, Visiting Guest Cantor Rhoda Harrison, and friends will be retelling the story of Purim with artfully altered lyrics of The Beatles, including a Magical Mystery Megillah Reading.
Festive fun and games start at 4 p.m. Costumes are welcome and encouraged for all ages. There will be Hamentashen baking at 4:30 p.m. There also will be crown and jewelry making, carnival games, and an escape room. Esther’s Dinner Theater will feature a pasta dinner at 5:15 p.m. The Purim Service, Schpiel (Story) and Megillah Reading will follow at 6 p.m.

Purim is the spring Jewish holiday based on the Biblical book of Esther, with its story of escape from planned persecution and slaughter. Despite the serious subject, the holiday is celebrated in joy and comedy, often retelling the story in farcical ways or with creative parody.
